Buffalo Seminary Theatre Invites All to its Fall Production
SEM girls bring Blue Stockings back to Buffalo's own bluestocking district

Buffalo Seminary's fall production of Blue Stockings opens Thursday, November 17 and runs through Saturday, Nov. 19.
Written by Jessica Swale, Blue Stockings is the nineteenth century story of young female students at Girton College in Cambridge, England forced to choose between love and knowledge. SEM began educating Buffalo's young women 1851, 35 years prior to the setting of Blue Stockings. As is tradition, the all-female cast portrays all characters.
"This is a riveting tale of women who want more than love, they crave knowledge," says theater teacher and director, Ms. Susan Drozd.
The decision to produce this show came from the late Toni Smith Wilson, Ms. Drozd's predecessor who taught at SEM for over 40 years. Ms. Drozd recalled, "Ms. Wilson knew what it took to be a SEM girl, knew that girls could meet a challenge, that they could conquer anything they put their minds to, and that they were mightier as a sisterhood. Who better than the SEM girls to tell the Girton girls' story?"
A rumor at Ms. Wilson's recent memorial service suggested that this area of Elmwood, where Buffalo Seminary has stood for over 100 years, was once referred to as "the blue-stocking district."
