Buffalo Seminary is an independent day and boarding high school for college-bound girls. Founded in 1851, SEM is located in the historic Elmwood Village neighborhood of Buffalo, New York and is registered on the National Register of Historic Places. Our five student and faculty residences are renovated historic homes adjacent to our school building. At SEM, girls from diverse backgrounds – united in their ambition for a superb and challenging education – can find a comprehensive program that prepares them well for both college and lifelong endeavors.

Dean of Teaching and Learning
The Dean of Teaching and Learning reports directly to the Assistant Head of School, meets regularly with the Head of School, and is a member of our administrative team. S/he coordinates all aspects of our program including our academic curriculum and extra-curricular activities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Dean of Teaching and Learning:
- Works with the Assistant Head of School and faculty to design and articulate a curriculum to best prepare our students for the world they will enter.
- Champions the philosophy and mission of the school and its leadership while meeting pedagogical goals and objectives.
- Spearheads new and innovative programs.
- Oversees the curriculum to ensure student success and the excellence of all academic programs at the school.
- Establishes and promotes high standards and expectations for academic performance among all students and faculty/staff.
- Assists Assistant Head of School with faculty evaluations.
- Chairs the curriculum committee.
- Serves as Capstone Program Coordinator.
- Coordinates regularly scheduled reviews of teaching materials with department chairs.
- Conducts professional development for faculty to keep them informed of current trends/research in curriculum and instruction.
- Oversees standardized testing programs including the AP program.
- Remains knowledgeable about national standards and state mandates regarding curriculum.
- Participates in committee, department, and staff meetings as well as school-sponsored events that would benefit from candidate's area(s) of expertise.
- Is involved in the school community at large.
Other Duties
Serves as an advisor, participates in residential activities, teaches as needed, coaches or serves as a club advisor, and participates in projects as requested by the Head of School.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree; Master's degree in education preferred
- 10 years teaching experience, preferably within independent schools
- Successful track record of collaboration
- Understanding of design principles for creating and evaluating the curriculum
- Outstanding interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Detail-oriented
- Strong work ethic and high level of integrity
