Jiani Lu'18 Cured by Pothole

SEM Girl Blows-Out Knee, Is Cured By Pothole In Buffalo, NY

The Pothole Cure has been found in the aftermath of a historic winter in Buffalo, NY.  No, it’s not a cure for potholes. But at least one big pothole or maybe a series of them was the cure for what ailed Buffalo Seminary (SEM) freshman Jiani Lu.

Yesterday was the second week of SEM lacrosse practice at the Knights of Columbus hall on Kenmore Avenue and Jiani was running sprints when she twisted her right knee as she changed direction. Said SEM’s assistant athletic director Kacie Mills, “She blew it out.”

EMT’s who arrived at the scene were “afraid to touch it,” said Ms. Mills who rode in the ambulance with Jiani, who is 14-years-old. She said the EMT’s decided to leave it for the emergency room doctors at Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo, about a four-mile ride away.

“Her knee was on the other side of her leg when we got in the ambulance,” Ms. Mills explained, “But when we got to the hospital after a ride through the S-curves it was back in place.”

“It was the potholes,” Jiani replied to Ms. Mills’ inquiry as to what had happened.

Ms. Mills confirms it was indeed a bumpy ride. The S-curves are a stretch of Delaware Avenue that bisect Delaware Park in Buffalo, and they are notorious right now for their gaping and plentiful potholes revealed in a recent melt.

Jiani, who is a residential student from China (lives in Lipke House), is now lounging on the couch in the school athletic office with her leg in a hip-to-toe brace. She’s got her computer in her lap and was entertaining students and faculty when last sighted. Will she ever play lacrosse again? Said Jiani, a fine example of a SEM girl embracing challenge,"Yeah. Sure."

Buffalo Magazine: Unique WNY History Class Was Inspired a World Away

Buffalo magazine (March 22, 2015) features SEM teachers Doug and Kyle Hopkins in a story about the nearly seven years they spent at sea with their daughters Abby '16 and Eliza '13. The trip inspired both Doug (an environmental lawyer) and Kyle (an actress and singer) to become teachers.

Onboard Estrela, their 32-foot boat, Doug hatched a plan to teach about home - Western New York - when they returned. The plan came to fruition in the fall of 2013, when the SEM history department launched a new curriculum, one that begins with a freshman year of WNY history. Said Doug, “To understand the world, we have to first understand our home. That’s what our history course is doing.”

SEM Day was celebrated today, beginning with Morning Meeting when SEM's 66 seniors triumphantly arrived in their college sweatshirts. Today is the day when decisions are final and deposits must be made. For a complete list of the colleges and universities the Class of 2015 was accepted at, as of April 15, click here.

Today was also marked by our 2d annual Voices From Abroad conference with portfolio presentations from the SEM students who went to Spain and France on exchanges this spring. Priceless quotes abounded, but insights were shared like, "Boys make school less about learning and more about annoying each other," (our exchange schools in both countries are co-ed) and the difference between teen life in Buffalo and Oviedo being, "Here plans always revolve around one question. Can I get a ride?"

SEM Day is also a fundraiser and this year we have a match from the SEM graduates of the Sears/Marlette family:

Rosemary Smith Marlette ‘41
Catherine Marlette Waddell ‘71
Suzanne Marlette Sears ‘73
Rosemary Sears ‘02

If alumnae and friends raise $10,000, SEM will receive a $5,000 match!

Send SEM a message about what made the school special for you, or donate at buffaloseminary.org/semday

New Report Supports the Benefits of Girls' Ed

May 15, 2015

A new report on the value of all-girls education was issued by the National Coalition for Girls' Schools.

Steeped in Learning: The Student Experience at All-Girls Schools analyzes the responses of nearly 13,000 high school girls attending all-girls schools, coeducational independent schools, and coeducational public schools to the 2013 High School Survey of Student Engagement.

According to the survey [conducted by the Center for Evaluation & Education Policy at Indiana University], girls attending girls’ schools are more likely to have an experience that supports their learning than are girls attending coeducational schools. In particular, students at all-girls schools report:

  1. Having higher aspirations and greater motivation.
  2. Being challenged to achieve more.
  3. Engaging more actively in the learning process.
  4. Participating in activities that prepare them for the world outside of school.
  5. Feeling more comfortable being themselves and expressing their ideas.
  6. Showing greater gains on core academic and life skills.
  7. Being and feeling more supported in their endeavors.

Among the most striking results detailed in this study is the effect the all-girls environment has on a girl’s personal aspirations. Virtually all girls within an all-girls environment expect to earn a four-year degree; two-thirds expect to go on to graduate-level work. This is compared to under 40% of coeducational public school girls with graduate school expectations.

Jody Douglass, who has been Buffalo Seminary's head of school since 2007, announced today that she will retire at the end of the 2015-16 school year.

Jody is SEM's 13th head of school. Under her direction, SEM has made enormous strides in its mission to be an outstanding girls' day and boarding school. Enrollment has reached unprecedented highs. The school recruited exceptional educators who continue to enrich the school’s varied program. The financial strength of the school improved dramatically with a growth in annual fundraising and in endowment under Jody. Both the school and the city of Buffalo have benefited by the addition of five residences to SEM’s unique urban campus - four of those houses are home to students from around the world, the nation, and the region.

SEM board of trustees chair Margaret Brown '72, thanked Jody for her many contributions to the school and for her dedication and love for SEM.

Jody served as head of school at George Stevens Academy in Blue Hill, Maine, where she helped start an international boarding program. She has served as assistant head of school and dean of faculty at Brooks School in North Andover, Massachusetts; associate dean of admission at Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont; and assistant director of admission at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. She has also served as director of college counseling at Dana Hall School in Wellesley, Massachusetts. In 2001, Ms. Douglass and her husband spent a year in Beijing, China, teaching for School Year Abroad.

Jody holds her BA in sociology from Bates College and her MA in English from the Bread Loaf School of English at Middlebury College.
